Radev won about 65% of the vote, while his rival Sofia University rector Anastass Gerdzhikov got about 32% of the vote. In turn, about 3% voted against both candidates, polls show.
Analysts say Radev’s victory could boost political stability in Bulgaria, where the third parliamentary elections were held this month because the parties failed to agree on a new government after the April and July elections.
In the first round of the presidential election a week ago, which had 23 candidates, Radev won 49.4% of the vote and Gerdzhikov 22.8%.
Both former Air Force commander Radev and Gerdzhikov, both 58, were independent candidates. However, Radeva is supported by the Socialist Party and its allies, the anti-corruption party “We Keep Changing” and the populist party “There Is Such a Nation”, which won the most votes in the parliamentary elections a week ago, while former prime minister Boiko Borisov Turkish Minority Party Movement for Rights and Freedoms.
Radev is known as a critic of former longtime prime minister Borisov. Borisov’s government was involved in a series of corruption scandals, and this year Radev took part in a protest against Borisov’s cabinet, calling: “Down with the mafia!”
Radev sparked a diplomatic scandal this week, announcing in a presidential debate on Thursday that “Crimea is currently in Russia.” Radev said Western sanctions on Russia over its aggression in Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea were not producing the expected results and that “it is very important to be pragmatic in foreign policy.” In protest of these statements, Ukraine on Friday referred to consultations with its ambassador to Bulgaria.
The President of Bulgaria has a mainly ceremonial role. The term of office of the Head of State is five years.
