Public support for Brexit is at an all-time low, according to a YouGov poll released on Thursday. Only 32% of Britons support the UK leaving the European Union, while 56% think it was a bad decision.
The poll would mark a significant change of opinion since June 2021, with one in five regretting the UK’s formal exit from the EU. Over the past 18 months, support for Brexit has fallen from 88% to an all-time low of 70%.
Meanwhile, the number of those who voted to leave the EU and now think it wasn’t the best decision has risen from 4% to 19%, according to Sky News.
The figures come after UK Treasury Secretary Jeremy Hunt confirmed the country was headed for a 1.4% recession in 2023, prompting the government to announce tax hikes to combat the economic crisis.
A former Bank of England rate-maker said this week that Brexit is the main reason the UK is now facing a new round of austerity measures, as it has “significantly reduced the economy’s productive potential ” and “undermined business investment”.
“The UK economy as a whole has been permanently damaged by Brexit,” said Michael Saunders, who is also an external member of the central bank’s monetary policy committee, in an interview with Bloomberg, reported by the Guardian .
