New Poll Reveals Kamala Harris Holds Favor Over Donald Trump Among AAPI Voters
Recent polling data shows that Vice President Kamala Harris enjoys greater favorability among Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) registered voters compared to former President Donald Trump. The survey, conducted by AAPI Data and APIAVote, indicates that approximately six out of ten AAPI voters view Harris positively, believing she better reflects their cultural identities and policy preferences.
Favorability Ratings Overview
According to the new survey, Harris benefits from a favorability score of around 60%, with only about a third of those surveyed expressing unfavorable views about her. In stark contrast, around 30% of AAPI voters possess a positive opinion of Trump, while nearly two-thirds perceive him unfavorably.
Shifts in Favorability Since Last Poll
These favorable ratings represent a notable increase for Harris since a similar poll conducted by AP-NORC/AAPI Data in October 2023, which indicated that half of AAPI adults held a positive view of the Vice President. In contrast, sentiment towards Trump has remained relatively unchanged among this voter base.
Representation Matters for AAPI Voters
As both a Black and South Asian American, Harris has actively engaged AAPI voters, particularly in pivotal states like Georgia, where their demographic presence is on the rise. The new survey highlights that around half of AAPI voters believe Harris better embodies their cultural identity compared to Trump, acknowledged by only about 10% of respondents.
The Importance of Identity
Despite this, only 30% of AAPI voters deem Harris’ Indian heritage as highly significant to their views. Interestingly, the connection to her background appears to vary, with approximately 70% of Asian Indian adults identifying Harris as a more representative candidate for their heritage, which surpasses the overall AAPI demographic sentiment.
