Poll: Most Germans support setting a limit on the term of office as chancellor

Most Germans support the idea of setting a limit on how long a person can hold the post of German Chancellor, according to a new public poll.

At present, the Chancellor can be re-elected an unlimited number of times in Germany.

According to a recent poll by YouGov, 61% of Germans were in favor of setting a limit, while 24% were against it. 15% of respondents refused to answer the question.

The biggest support for such a step was among the supporters of the Eurosceptic party “Alternative to Germany” (AfD). 80% of them would like a limit to be set on the number of times a politician can hold the office of chancellor.

However, among the conservatives represented by Merkel (CDU / CSU), only 48% of respondents are ready to support such a step.

The survey was conducted from May 21 to May 24 and was attended by 2,085 people.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel plans to leave her political career after the upcoming Bundestag elections on September 26, during which she has led the German government for 16 years without interruption.

Helmut Kohl also served as Chancellor for 16 years from 1982 to 1998. Conrad Adenauer was the Chancellor of West Germany for 14 years from 1949 to 1963.
