If Pieter Omtzigt participates in the elections with his own list, he is immediately the largest. That is what Maurice de Hond says on the basis of his new poll.
There has been a lot of speculation lately about a possible new match for Pieter Omtzigt. He is currently a member of parliament as an “independent Member of Parliament”. But that is of course going to change. Eventually he will (have to) come up with his own club. And yes, the expectation is that he will immediately bring a few well-known names with him – people he can rely on.
Maurice de Hond took a look at the electoral impact that a List Pieter Omtzigt would have for today’s poll. And yes, it is significant. Because if he doesn’t participate, the VVD is by far the biggest. If he does, on the other hand, his new party will become the largest party and Mark Rutte’s premiership will be over:
It is striking that Omtzigt then gets his voters from almost everywhere… except FVD, SGP, DENK, BIJ1. These parties are totally immune to the rise of Omtzigt. Not surprising, of course, because all those parties have a clear, strong and passionate following. But all other parties lose out because of Omtzigt.

And that is interesting – and dangerous for those parties. Because once that starts – ie if he announces his party and then performs well in the polls – new parties like BBB and JA21 will certainly suffer. Once the exodus starts there, it can be very difficult to do anything about it.
