The radio union is mourning the death at the age of 84 of Polito Vega, popularly known as “El Rey de la Radio”.
The announcement was made by the announcers of the radio station LaMega 97 point 9, during their morning program.
Born in Puerto Rico, Vega came to New York City in 1959.
His first radio show was Fiesta Time in 1960.
Since then he was a constant presence on New York radio. She also dabbled occasionally in music, and television.
“He was a bulwark in the Hispanic community, he was an example to follow, and the most important thing about Polito was his full support for our music,” said a neighbor.
“It would be a very nice tribute if a street in New York were named after Polito,” said another neighbor.
In recent years, he had a space on weekends at La Mega, where he played salsa, merengue, bachata and boleros.
Vega also discovered young musical talents.
