The week-long failure of face-to-face classes in schools due to the ongoing pandemic will leave gaps, especially among students who previously had some catching up to do. “Suspended schoolchildren are suspended even more by Corona,” said the head of the Tölzer youth promotion, Franz Späth, on Tuesday in the main and finance committee. On the other hand, there is a falling need in the spa town for the care of refugees: Whereas 382 refugees and asylum seekers came to Bad Tölz in 2018, there are currently 322, 96 of them entitled to stay.
The multigenerational house of the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK), which has been taking care of the organization of volunteer refugee workers in the city since 2015 and also offers learning support for disadvantaged children and young people, has now submitted an application due to the changed requirements: The city Bad Tölz should continue to promote the full-time position of the volunteer coordinator for refugees to the previous extent, but with a new focus: 15 hours for refugee care, 20 hours for the organization of the voluntary learning helpers as well as for networking with schools, youth welfare and other educational institutions. The city would have to provide a total of around 120,000 euros for another two years. “I support this application very much,” said youth development manager Späth. The grant could counteract “the educational gap, which is widening further through Corona”. This was also the view of the members of the main and finance committee, who unanimously recommended the resolution to the city council.
“That is sustainable and money well invested,” said Filiz Cetin (SPD). Bärbel Weixner (Greens), herself the headmistress, also approved the application. “As a school, we would have a contact person for the learning assistants, and that would run centrally through the multi-generation house.” The need is there, especially for children with language difficulties and social deficits.
