Politico: Washington and Berlin hold back Kyiv’s bid to join NATO

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is going against his “victory plan”, which also includes Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Germany and the United States, in particular, are skeptical about calls for an immediate invitation, although Zelenskyi himself admitted that entry would only be possible after the end of the war with Russia.

Brussels reporter Politico, citing several NATO and US sources who wished to remain anonymous, he wrotethat the main concern comes from the risk of drawing the Alliance into direct conflict with Moscow.

US Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith confirmed that “the Alliance has not yet reached a stage where it is ready to offer membership or an invitation to Ukraine.”

The stance, according to the server, reflects concerns that a quick invitation could escalate the two-and-a-half-year conflict.

More members have doubts

Apart from Germany and the US, the other opponents of Ukraine’s invitation to the Alliance are Hungary and Slovakia, with both countries taking a generally pro-Kremlin stance towards Kyiv .

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán called Zelensky’s plan “more than alarming” and suspended EU funds intended to arm Ukraine. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico then warned that Ukraine’s entry into NATO “could be the basis for a third war”.

However, Belgium, Slovenia and Spain also have a conservative approach, which hides behind the decisions of Berlin and Washington, notes Politico.

According to one of the representatives of NATO, these countries “support the idea in theory”, but as soon as it comes closer to implementation, they may speak publicly. This creates tension with states that openly support Ukraine.

More information about the content of the Ukrainian plan

President Zelenskyy told MPs in Ukraine that there are five main points in the plan. There are also three secret changes that will only be presented to the leaders of the individual groups, explained the chairman of the ruling party’s parliamentary group, Služebník lidu.

Zelenskyi put the greatest emphasis on the issue of Ukraine’s invitation to NATO, which, according to him, would show Vladimir Putin that “his geopolitical calculations are wrong.”

For example, Prime Minister Donald Tusk stressed at the EU summit that Poland continues to support the “opening of NATO’s perspective to Ukraine” and that it firmly stands by Zelenskyi in this matter. .

Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said recently when US President Joe Biden visited Berlin that he does not want NATO to be involved in the war. “Then it would be an even bigger disaster,” he said.

Neither the US nor Germany refuse to accept Ukraine into the Alliance in the future, but they want to wait for the end of the war.

According to sources from the White House, Zelenskyi may be putting pressure on NATO even before the US elections due to fear that Donald Trump‘s victory could mean a significant drop in support for Kyiv.
