Accusations of mismanagement of European funds by members of the European People’s Party, according to “politico.eu”, are being examined by the EU’s top prosecutors, in cooperation with the Belgian authorities.
The investigation, according to the publication, is led by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), which is responsible for investigating serious crimes concerning the financial interests of the European Union.
The EPPO confirms that an investigation is underway, but not about whom. “We can only confirm that we have an investigation into allegations of misuse of EU funds committed in Belgium by members of a European Parliament political group,” an EPPO spokesman said in a written statement. “However, at this stage, this investigation is simply based on facts and not specific individuals.”
The representative of the Belgian prosecutor’s office Eric Van Der Sypt told “politico.eu” that “the investigation is being conducted by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and therefore I cannot comment on the case.”
According to the publication, no one has been officially charged.
The EPP, commenting on the information on the investigation of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, denied that the prosecutor “asked for any information about an investigation involving his staff.”
