Politicians Propose Contradiction Solution for Organ Donation: Opt-Out System Discussed

Both politicians advocate a contradiction solution for organ donation. A few days ago, Laumann announced that NRW was planning a similar initiative in the Bundesrat with other states. Lauterbach advocates discussing a contradiction solution again in the Bundestag.

With the opt-out solution, you would have to actively oppose it if you don’t want to donate organs after death. Currently, it’s the other way around: you have to actively consent if you want to become an organ donor.

During a tour of the information stands, Lauterbach filled out a wish list at a “tree of life”. At the stand of the Teddy Bear Hospital, he took the heart out of a giant, hinged bear. With the teddy bear hospital, medical students want to bring children closer to health topics in a playful way. Lauterbach was also the patron of the “Gift Years of Life” campaign. Organ transplant recipients used signs to document the number of years that an organ donation had given them.

According to the Ministry of Health, around 1,800 people are waiting for a new organ in North Rhine-Westphalia alone, and around 8,500 across Germany. The number of organ donations reached a low point in 2022: nationwide there were only 869 postmortem organ donors.
