Political tension around the corona pass is rising. Will the pass only be available for vaccinated people and people who have had corona? The plan of the outgoing cabinet to introduce the so-called 2G policy is not only leading to fierce divisions in society, but also in politics. A day before the debate on the issue, it is unclear whether a majority of the parties support the plan in its current form.
This means that unvaccinated people will soon no longer be able to go to cafes, restaurants and, for example, sports canteens, where they can now do so with a negative test. Pure vaccination compulsion, say parties including the PVV, Forum for Democracy, JA21, Denk and the SGP.
compulsion
In March of this year, the full House supported another motion of the ChristenUnie and the PVV, who say that vaccination should not be subject to coercion. The cabinet also took this position. Now, six months later, shifts are visible, but sufficient support for the 2G plan is by no means certain.
VVD and D66 seem to see no other way out of the current situation with high numbers of infections and rapidly increasing hospital admissions. D66 wants to introduce 2G and a third injection as soon as possible, party leader Kaag said last Friday. “Otherwise it’s mopping with the tap open.”
Parties such as the CDA, the ChristenUnie and the PvdA, important to help the plan get a majority, are not laying their cards on the table yet. The CDA calls the measures that came into effect this weekend “logical”, because the care no longer takes it. The party has not yet decided on 2G, and consultations are still ongoing at the ChristenUnie and PvdA.
The ChristenUnie in particular has difficulty with the 2G measure because of the curtailing of the freedoms of people who have not been vaccinated and a threatening dichotomy. But the other parties also have difficulty excluding unvaccinated people. On the other hand, they realize that closing the catering industry for all vaccinated people is also drastic.
