Political Prisoners Subjected to Isolation in El Helicoide Prison: Concerns about their Well-being and Integrity

The lawyer Zair Mundaray communicated through the social network X (formerly Twitter) that two political prisoners, Captain Juan Caguaripano and Sergeant Juan Carlos Monasterios, were subjected to isolation in the El Helicoide prison.

The measure, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, August 17, 2023, is part of a broader context of concern for the integrity of those detained in the compound, details Tal Cual.

“New attack against the political prisoners in El Helicoide. Since early today (Thursday) they have locked up Captain Caguaripano and Juan Carlos Monasterios (whose mother has been in forced disappearance at the hands of the State for two days) in isolation. There are other political prisoners to whom this measure has been applied.” indicated the lawyer Mundaray.

The isolation is considered a new attack against those detained for political reasons in El Helicoide. This adds to the growing concern for the well-being of detainees, who on previous occasions have already suffered from this punitive measure.

The lawyer Mundaray highlighted the relevance of the intervention of the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.

This, in order to ensure the integrity and respect for the fundamental rights of political prisoners who remain in state custody.
