Political polls: who do pacifists vote for? One in three comes from the 5S

The P factor affects the choice of vote at political elections. There is no single party of pacifists but still it is he M5S to attract the largest share. Surprisingly the League receives attention and sympathy even from a portion, albeit marginal, of this target. The Catholics, practitioners or not, are predominantly. Around 10 million voters feel close to the pacifist positions and the analysis of the Noto Survey polling institute conducted for Republic.

They mainly reside in the North (54%), have a higher education qualification (62%) and the majority are over 54 years old. It should not be misled that 14% of pacifists are among the youngest (18-34 years) as this group represents 20% of the adult population, in addition to the fact that it is the one that makes itself heard most in the media, also thanks to the succession of demonstrations by university students on the topic. Religion is another fundamental element that characterizes our pacifism. 62% are Catholic and among these a little more than half (35%) profess to be practicing. Secular people, on the other hand, represent 21%, one in five does not consider faith a factor influencing their choices and lifestyle. The massive presence of Catholics is certainly another fact to highlight given the positions expressed first and Pope francesco on ongoing conflicts.

Regarding the choice in relation to the european vote of next June 8-9, it should be underlined that those who define themselves as pacifists intend to go to the polls to a greater extent (59%) compared to the current estimate of the Italian population (50%). They are a people who are obviously more sensitive to social and political events and believe in participation. However, another fact to reflect on is that it would be wrong to believe that the choice of party is solely dictated by political positions with respect to the ongoing wars. In fact, this behavior is decisive for only 24% of pacifists but the largest share, 62%, declares that their decision also considers the position that the party has on other issues of a more social and economic nature. It is for this reason, therefore, that there is no “single party of pacifists” but it is also true that many appreciations are directed in favor of the M5S. In fact, for approximately 1/3 it is Conte’s party that is considered closest to this ideology, for one in five it is instead the list Green Left Alliance to express more in line positions, only 11% recognize the Pd a strong dose of “pacifism” but 10% see the League as the party that also intercepts this world and which therefore becomes the closest governing force.

How will the pacifist vote be distributed in the next European elections? Considering that six out of ten intend to go to the polling station, the M5S is the preferred choice by as many as 40%, followed by the Democratic Party indicated by 14% and also in this case the League confirms itself among the parties with greater attraction as 10 % could choose Salvini. In the comparison between which lists are considered “most pacifist” and the voting intentions, several relevant aspects emerge, demonstrating how in the European vote “pacifism” is one of the factors that influences the choice but is not the only one. Even if the M5S confirms itself as the first party in both rankings, the Green-Left Alliance, indicated as the second most pacifist force, becomes the fourth in terms of vote choice. While the training was born on the impulse of Michele Santoro, Peace, Land and Dignity, which has as its “main mission” precisely that of representing these positions, is third among the parties considered pro-pacifist, but then drops to sixth place among the lists chosen in the voting booth. In short, the war will influence the electoral outcome but only in part and the formation of consensus will also be related to other issues. It is difficult to estimate today how much the P factor could weigh on the outcome of the European electoral competition, but one thing is certain: the pacifists will not desert the polls.
