Department of Education and Culture • The Department of Education and Culture has prepared a basic report on political education in the canton of Glarus and discussed it with the cantonal young parties. In addition to the school’s tasks, the report also shows extracurricular learning opportunities. Political participation turns spectators into participants.
In the legislative planning for 2023-2026, the government council aims to make it easier for the population in the canton of Glarus to participate in politics. This participation is made easier if the basis for an interest in political action is laid among children and young people and the skills and abilities necessary for this are taught. Young people should therefore be increasingly motivated to actively shape society and be given concrete opportunities to do so.
Political education is important and valuable…
The political education of children and young people is of great social importance. It’s not just about imparting knowledge about political structures and processes, but also about promoting values such as democracy, tolerance and freedom of expression. It is important that children and young people are given the tools to actively participate in shaping society. The key skills include knowing how to express one’s opinion, how to find compromises, how to distinguish fact from fiction or how to resolve conflicts in a peaceful way.
… especially in the rural community canton of Glarus
In 2023, the Department of Education and Culture prepared the basic report “Political Education in the Canton of Glarus” (media release, May 2, 2023). The document describes how political education is currently taught in elementary school and at the upper secondary level. It also highlights new school and extracurricular offerings that can increase interest in helping to shape the community. In the canton of Glarus, where 16-year-olds are eligible to vote, political education should be explicitly promoted.
School is a place where young people can familiarize themselves with various topics related to political participation. It offers ideal conditions for conveying values that are necessary for the development of enlightened citizens. This basic report shows this and also makes it clear that not everything can be transferred to the school.
