The political crisis on Terschelling continues. The only two councilors in the municipality have announced that they are resigning. Gea van Essen (Local Interest Terschelling) and Jeltje Hoekstra (VVD) stated on Wednesday evening that they lack support and confidence from the municipal council.
“We have had a tough time with the management crisis,” Van Essen said. “But apparently the poison cup is not yet empty for you. You do not grant the aldermen any recovery time. And a well-functioning, new council, no start-up time. You are too harsh in this.”
According to Van Essen, the council is behaving like a ‘bully’ towards the aldermen. She referred to the crises in the Netherlands. “But you think you know for sure that the delays taking place here are caused by a poorly functioning organization and the responsible councilors.”
“You don’t want to accept a plausible explanation that it is more complex than that,” says Van Essen. “You already have your conviction ready. And yet another vote of no confidence in the bag.”
VVD councilor Hoekstra, who has held the office for ten years, spoke of a council that “constantly batters us”, quotes Omrop Fryslân.
Phone call
Mayor Caroline van der Pol (VVD) left in December. She was under fire because relations between her and the municipal council had been disrupted. During an extra council meeting about this, she received a phone call with the offer to become mayor of Castricum. After returning to the council chamber, to the surprise of those present, she announced that she had another job and would be leaving. The council then determined that she should resign immediately.
The councilors on Terschelling, together with acting mayor Roel Cazemier, form the Terschelling council. At the request of the municipal council, they will continue to fulfill this role for another month to give the coalition parties time to nominate new councilors.
