The Czech Republic is in a political crisis: former Prime Minister Andrei Babisz has lost in the parliamentary elections, but Czech President Milos Zeman is in the intensive care unit of the hospital for the second day in a row. Therefore, the formation of the next government may be jeopardized.
Although there is very little news about President Zeman’s health, he is said to have serious liver problems.
Therefore, it is not clear whether Zeman will be able to convene a sitting of the new parliament within 30 days, nominate the next head of government, as well as fully participate in the government formation negotiations as a mediator.
Although the parliamentary elections won the three-party center-right alliance led by Petra FialasZemans had previously said that the formation of a government would be entrusted only to the leader of the party and not to the leader of the alliance.
This could be in favor of Zeman’s long-term ally, Prime Minister Andrejs Babišs, who has been involved in another scandal over buying expensive property through an offshore company.
One of the wealthiest Czech businessmen Babiss before also criticized for conflict of interest Receiving European Union subsidies.
