On 18 May, Polish sport climber Kacper Tekieli was found dead after an accident in the Swiss Alps.
He was married to former cross-country skiing star Justyna Kowalczyk-Tekieli.
– He was everything to me, she wrote in a post on Instagram.
Tekieli was 38 years old and the accident happened after an avalanche on a trip in the mountains.
– Made a mistake
Afterwards, the Polish climbing legend, Krzysztof Wielicki, came up with another quote Fakt.pl which did not fall into good soil in the home country.
– There is a saying that says: “It is not the mountains that kill, it is people who make mistakes”, said Wielicki.
– Just going to the mountains poses a danger. Unfortunately, Kacper probably made a mistake, he crossed the slope with his skis, he continued.
The statements received strong protests, according to the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza.
They write that mountain climbers contradicted the version and believed that Tekieli had a rucksack and special pillows that were made to avoid avalanches.
Wielicki later regretted it and gave a new interview to Fakt.
– I apologize that my assumptions about the causes of Kacper Tekieli’s accident were unjustified and the result of a lack of complete knowledge of the incident, it reads.
– After receiving it, it is considered bad luck, an accident that could have happened to anyone, continues the 73-year-old.
Furthermore, Wielicki writes that he apologizes to Justyna if she felt offended.
Married to Bjørgen’s rival
Tekieli was a renowned sport climber. In 2019, he won the Piolets d’Or award, also known as the Golden Ice Axe, for climbing a new route to Snøvasskjerdingan in Sunndalen in Møre og Romsdal.
Tekieli married Marit Bjørgen’s longtime rival in 2020 and together they have a son Hugo.
– A very sad message to receive. I send my deepest condolences in the grief and loss to Justyna and her family, wrote Bjørgen in an SMS to The daily newspaper.
