Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki of the conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) has presented a minority government despite losing the majority in parliament. The Polish opposition is angry and calls it a “farce” and a “charade”.
The PiS lost the majority in parliament after elections in mid-October. The proposed cabinet contains few PiS leaders. That is a conscious choice, says party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
“We don’t want too many politicians in the government. And we want to show that it is possible to govern in a different way,” Kaczynski said in an interview with the Polish Press Agency PAP. The party leader dismisses the suggestion that many PiS leaders did not want to participate in a minority government as a “big lie”.
The government team must gain the confidence of a majority in parliament within fourteen days. According to observers, that is unthinkable.
The vote is likely to take place on December 11, when the opposition, led by Donald Tusk, former president of the European Council, must form a government. Since the elections, Tusk and his allies have held 248 of the 460 seats in the Polish House of Representatives.
‘Incumbent power is trying to buy time’
Polish opposition parties see the formation of a minority government as a delaying tactic. “We all see that this is a big charade,” say Marcin Kierwinski from the opposition platform Koalicja Obywatelska. “The incumbent power is trying to buy time.”
On November 10, the Polish opposition parties reached their own coalition agreement. Tusk then said the opposition bloc was ready to take power.
President Andrzej Duda says the formation of a minority government follows “political, historical and constitutional traditions”.
