AFPPolish President Duda

Polish President Duda says he will veto the 2024 budget law. He is not happy with the reforms of the new government. This week, state media executives were fired by the new culture minister.
The pro-European government is sweeping the public broadcaster. Under the leadership of the right-wing nationalist PiS, it had become a propaganda channel for the party. According to the new government led by Prime Minister Tusk, drastic action is needed to regain confidence in public media.
‘Violation of the Constitution’
Duda is lashing out at the reforms on social media. He speaks of a “flagrant violation of the constitution and principles of a democratic constitutional state. Public media must first be restored.” Duda also says he will submit a series of his own plans to parliament after Christmas.
It is the first time that the conservative Duda has openly opposed the new government. A presidential veto can be overridden by parliament with a 60 percent majority. Tusk’s coalition does not have enough seats for this, namely 248 out of 460. Nevertheless, the Prime Minister says on X that he is confident that the problem will be solved.
Series of dismissals at agencies
In addition to the media landscape, many layoffs have also occurred in government. The government has fired, among other things, the heads of the intelligence service, the security services and an anti-corruption organization and replaced them with new people.
PiS calls it a shame. After the new leadership of state television TVP Info suspended broadcasts, party politicians moved to occupy the building. In the end that didn’t work out.
