Polish President Andrzej Duda said he is open to negotiations with the new government on changes to the judicial system, but sets the condition for the refusal of checks on judges who were appointed during the rule of the Law and Justice party and Duda’s presidency.
As European Pravda reports, his words are quoted RMF24.
“I will not allow any checks on judges appointed during the 8.5 years of my presidency. These are people who went through all the procedures before taking on a judicial position or promotion. They were appointed in accordance with the rules, took the oath before the president… I will not allow , so that these people are checked and persecuted,” said Andrzej Duda, adding that the former opposition allegedly wants “revenge” for them.
The President added that he stands for complete independence of judges.
“As for other aspects of changes in the judicial system, I am open to discussions,” said Andrzej Duda.
Last week, Polish Justice Minister Adam Bodnar took the rare step of announcing the removal of his powers. Deputy Prosecutor General Dariusz Barski, who is considered loyal to Bodnar’s predecessor, chairman of the right-wing Solidarity Poland party Zbigniew Ziobro.
After this, the Polish Constitutional Court on January 15 suspended the decision.
Also widely publicized was the arrest of two former heads of the Ministry of Internal Affairs after a court conviction, which the former ruling Law and Justice party called “political persecution.”
