The Polish prime minister received a booster dose against the coronavirus and urged citizens to get vaccinated at a time when 570 deaths were reported in one day.
Mateusz Morawiecki made his appeal to a country where only 54% of the population is vaccinated. The numbers of those fully vaccinated have increased slowly in recent weeks and especially in recent days due to fears of the new omicron variant.
Poland registered more than 29,000 new cases, the highest rate since a wave in the spring turned Europe into a global epicenter.
Morawiecki said Christmas could be much more peaceful if many more of the 38 million residents were vaccinated soon. He stressed that Christmas is a time for children’s reunions with their grandparents and that many of those encounters “unfortunately … had a tragic end.”
He also supported a proposal to allow employers to check whether their workers are vaccinated, an idea that has sparked some resistance.
