Polish Officials Accused of Slowing Down Nord Stream Sabotage Investigation: European Investigators Raise Alarm

Polish officials allegedly slowed down the investigation into attacks on Nord Stream gas pipelines in the fall of 2022, the Finanzen.net portal claims, citing unnamed European investigators.

Details: The publication, citing investigators, claims that officials were in no hurry to provide information and hid key evidence about the movement of possible saboteurs across Polish territory. Investigators are now hoping that the new government in Warsaw, which took office in December, will help clear up the case.

European investigators have long speculated that the attack originated in Ukraine via Poland. However, Warsaw’s lack of cooperation makes it difficult to determine whether the attack occurred with or without the knowledge of the former Polish government, officials say.

Some investigators are now considering asking the office of Poland’s new Prime Minister Donald Tusk for help in the investigation.

Poland is a member of NATO. Any suspicion that a country might be hiding information about an attack on an ally would undermine confidence in the Alliance, which is facing one of its greatest challenges since its founding.

From Moscow’s point of view, any behavior by Poland indicating involvement in sabotage can be considered an aggressive act on the part of NATO.

However, no evidence has yet been presented that the Polish government was involved in the bombings. And even if some Polish officials were involved, it could have happened without the knowledge of the political leadership, investigators say.

However, attempts by Polish officials to obstruct the investigation have raised growing suspicions about Warsaw’s role and motives.

A few days after taking office, Tusk fired the heads of all intelligence services, including those involved in the investigation of the Nord Stream case.

What preceded:

  • As is known, the explosion of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines occurred in September 2022 at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Denmark, Sweden and Germany have launched their own investigations into what happened.
  • In March, materials appeared in Western media suggesting that non-governmental groups could have been behind the explosion of gas pipelines. Russians and Ukrainians could enter. Later, the media claimed that Dutch intelligence allegedly learned about the sabotage plan by the Ukrainians and warned the United States about it.
  • In May, a joint investigation by journalists from Northern Europe was made public, according to which Russian ships were at least visited the explosion areas three times on branches of the Russian Nord Stream gas pipeline, and one of them five days before the incident.
