Polish Minister for Family and Social Policy Marlena Malag said on Saturday that Warsaw plans to raise the minimum wage twice during 2024 to help people cope with high inflation. This comes as the ruling Law and Justice party prepares for parliamentary elections later this year.
The cost of living has risen dramatically in recent months, with inflation in February hitting its highest level in more than a quarter of a century at 18.4 percent year-on-year, and inflation in April hitting 14.7 percent.
“The minimum wage next year will be above 4,200 zlotys” – about $1,015 -, the Polish Press Agency quoted Malach as saying, adding, “As happened in 2023, the minimum wage will be raised in the next year twice, the first starting from the first of January, and the second Starting on the first of July.
Malag revealed that three million people in Poland currently receive the minimum wage, explaining that the aim of this step is to ensure that the people of Poland who receive the minimum wage can live in dignity.
The minimum wage had witnessed a first increase to 3,490 zlotys – about 826 dollars – starting from January 2023, and it will witness another increase to 3,600 zlotys – about 850 dollars – starting in July.
The date for the parliamentary elections has not yet been set, but they are scheduled for October or November.
The government in Poland is legally bound to raise the minimum wage twice in the same year if the inflation rate in the previous year exceeded 5 percent.
