Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage Bartholomew Sienkiewicz announced the liquidation of the Polish state television channel, radio and news agency. The minister’s words were quoted by RMF24 radio. “In connection with the president’s decision to stop funding state media, I have decided to liquidate the companies Telewizja Polska SA, Polskie Radio SA, Polskiej Agencji Prasowej SA,” Sienkiewicz said.
He specified that “in the current situation, this will ensure the continuation of the activities of these companies, carry out the necessary restructuring and prevent layoffs due to lack of funding.”
Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda submitted to the Sejma (the lower house of parliament) his draft government spending for 2024, blocking the allocation of 3 billion zlotys (about $750 million) for the needs of the state-run television channel Telewizja Polska.
Last week, Sienkiewicz, appointed by new Prime Minister Donald Tusk, fired the heads of Telewizja Polska and the news agency PAR, replacing them with his own candidates. The former ruling Law and Justice party, whose supporters previously controlled these state media, disagreed with these decisions, calling for a vote of no confidence in Senkiewicz. Thus, a paradoxical situation arises when several people are simultaneously considered to be the heads of Telewizja Polska.
On December 23, Duda vetoed a state media funding project proposed by the Tusk government that would have allocated 3 billion zlotys to Telewizja Polska. He called the Tusk cabinet’s decision to fire the TV channel’s management “a clear violation of the constitution.”
