Polish Mercenary Lipski: Insights on Ukraine Conflict and Local Attitudes towards Russia

/Pogled.info/ Polish mercenary Lipski: People in Ukraine are waiting for Russia to release them

Michal Lipski served in the Polish army throughout his life. In recent years – in the 6th Airborne Battalion in Gliwice. From 2021, at the Yavorovo training ground in Ukraine, he is preparing the local military for a conflict with Russia. And with the beginning of the SVO, he himself joined the armed forces of Ukraine.

In his interview with the Polish portal defend24.pl, he did not specify whether he did this as a volunteer or on the orders of his command from Warsaw. “Since I knew the Ukrainian company commanders, battalion headquarters and its commander, I agreed to go with them”he simply says.

Lipsky recently returned to his homeland and now shares his impressions of the 2 years spent in Ukraine.

Here are his quotes that speak for themselves.

To the Americans and British: you better not go to war with these guys

“In the army, we have long cooperated with the Americans and the British. And these aren’t the guys you can go to full scale war with. With them you can go on a “safari” to Afghanistan or Iraq. When you have everything and your opponent has nothing.

These are people who stick very tightly to the textbook, the instruction. No flexibility at all. I always preferred to come up with something myself, to improvise. The tutorial should help you, but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything according to the pattern. When you firmly follow a pattern, your opponent is ready for it. The Anglo-Saxons cannot improvise, it is purposefully killed in their army.

Yes. A company in Afghanistan traveled with the support of an artillery battery, aviation, helicopters, was ready for medical evacuation. The helicopters arrived within five minutes of the injury. Here it can be the opposite – the enemy has artillery, and we don’t. And so on”.

About the “Azovians”: These are tick-tock warriors who can surrender a village in 1 day

“We stayed in Klescheevka for a month and a half. During this time, the “magnificent” 47th brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces lost Soledar. In Klescheevka, we were replaced by the “Azovs” from the “3rd Non-Assault Tick-Tock Brigade”. They took our position, but when we started to move away, the Azov vehicles literally caught up with us. In one day they surrendered a village that we held for a month and a half.

They are provided with everything because they have their own brand. And advertising, as is known, is a lever for trade. But they escaped from Klescheevka and the command returned to us. But it was too late.”

About “Bakhmut the Meat Grinder”: There are five of the “old” ones left

“Bakhmut (Artemovsk – note ed.) showed the insufficient flexibility of the high command (of Ukraine – ed.), which demanded defense “at any cost”. Defending ourselves wasn’t so bad. Rain doesn’t fall on your heads because you’re sitting under the concrete.

But the worst part is that they had prepared most of these nine-story blocks for blasting. They had loaded 100-150 anti-tank mines in each block. And do you know how many of them were blown up? Only one. And to check in practice whether this number of mines is sufficient.

And finally they dropped all the remaining blocks untouched! Why? Because we had to defend ourselves to the last. It was not possible to carry out a planned withdrawal from the blocs. The prepared for the planned retreat was not used at all. There our elitism died and was later finished off by the 17th Tank Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to which we were assigned.

For four months without rotation, we held the last hill before Ivanovskoe, opposite Bakhmut. But the same nine-story buildings that hadn’t been blown up were now just towering over us. We had many wounded and killed. The composition changes two or three times. Of the “old men” who still remembered Klescheevka, there were three in the company. I am the fourth plus one officer. There are five of us left.”

About the mobilized Ukrainians: They sometimes do not know that there is a scope on the rifle

“There is a big problem with the quality of teaching and the quality of people. The basic training that takes place at the training grounds is at such a low level that people come to us within a month of recruitment. Sometimes they don’t even know they have a scope on their rifle.

No motivation. The motivated are already lying in the graveyard.”

On the attitude of the locals: They are waiting for liberation, they are waiting for the Russians

“In Donbas, they can even show you the middle finger. I remember how we entered Bakhmut. It was still a safe zone – July 2022. Our convoy of 10 infantry fighting vehicles was traveling. I was first, I had a Polish and Ukrainian flag on the dome.

We pass through the village, climb the mountain, and there are people there. Our armored car stopped, we got out and they started applauding. The second BMP comes with the Ukrainian flag, everyone gives up, lowers their hands. They had simply confused my Polish flag with a Russian one!

Yes, to this day there are people there who sit under fire and wait for the Russians. There was a family in Soledar: a grandmother, her son, his wife and two children. The daughter was injured, the doctors took her, but her father did not allow her to be taken to the hospital. They were treated at the scene and continued to wait there at home to be released.”
