After stopping the protests during the holidays, Polish farmers resumed blocking the Medica border crossing on the Polish-Ukraine border on Thursday, local media reported.
Farmers are demanding government subsidies for corn, increased loans to farmers and no increase in property taxes.
Poland’s new agriculture minister, Czeslaw Sekerski, has promised farmers that the government will meet some of their demands, but it will take more time to implement them.
Protest coordinator Roman Kondrov told the PAP news agency on Wednesday that they have not received written confirmation that their demands will be met, so they are continuing their protests. Today, in the presence of journalists in Medika, Kondrov repeated the demand for a written promise. “If an agreement is signed between the Ministry of Agriculture and the farmers, we will stop the protest as soon as possible,” Kondrov promised.
Polish truck drivers have been protesting for several weeks at three other border points on Poland’s border with Ukraine. They are protesting the European Union’s (EU) decision to scrap the permit system following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The reliefs were supposed to end in June, but they were extended for another year. Polish carriers believe that the cancellation of the permit regime has led to price cuts by Ukrainian competitors, which has seriously affected their revenues.
