According to the first indication of the election results in Poland, the ruling party PiS is recording a victory. The conservative party of Prime Minister Morawiecki and party leader Kaczynski received 36.8 percent of the votes in the exit poll. That is a loss compared to the previous elections, and it will be difficult for the party to achieve a majority coalition.

During the election campaign, right-wing potential coalition partners, such as the Confederation, have already said that they do not want to work with PiS. Moreover, that party has done poorly in the elections, with a forecast of 6.2 percent of the votes.

The second party, Civic Platform of Donald Tusk, can count on 31.6 percent of the votes, according to this first forecast. This means that his party would win a majority with two other moderate opposition parties. Together they would reach 53.2 percent of the votes.

“I am the happiest man on earth,” Tusk said after the exit poll was announced. “Democracy has won. Poland has won. I have never been so happy with a second place.”

Record

Nearly 30 million Poles were allowed to vote today and they did so en masse. The turnout percentage is 70 percent, much higher than the previous record turnout of 63 percent in the 1989 elections.

Officially voting was possible until 9 p.m., but at that time there were still long lines at the polling stations. Voting therefore went on longer.

The final results of the elections are not expected until Tuesday morning.
