Polish Duo Bryl and Łosiak’s Journey to Beach Volleyball World Championship Semi-Finals

The Polish duo Michał Bryl/Bartosz Łosiak’s march to the title of beach volleyball world champions failed. Our players, despite having match balls, lost in the semi-finals of the tournament to the Swedish duo of David Ahman/Jonatan Hellvig 11:21, 22:20, 16:18. This is not the end, however, because the Poles still have a chance to return from Tlaxcala, Mexico, with medals around their necks.

The performance of our duo at the ongoing beach volleyball world championships is quite a surprise. Their entire season was not particularly successful, and in the last tournament before the world championship, which was held in Paris, Michał Bryl and Bartosz Łosiak won only one match. After arriving in Mexico, their form improved significantly. The Reds and Whites lost only one set in the group stage, and that was when they had already secured advancement. In turn, in the quarterfinals they defeated the American pair of Miles Partain/Andy Benesh, although their rivals had beaten the Poles earlier in the season. The victory gave them the first, historic semi-final of the Beach Volleyball World Championships for our country.

The historic semi-final of the Beach Volleyball World Championships was not for us. Bryl and Łosiak will fight for bronze

Unfortunately, the semi-final did not go as expected for our representatives. Michał Bryl and Bartosz Łosiak were broken by the Swedes in the first set. They lost the opening game 11:21 and there was little indication that the rest of this match would be so exciting. Fortunately, the beginning of the second set gave hope.

This one started very evenly and that’s how it went. Until the score was 12:12, David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig had to keep chasing the result. Only then did they manage to take the lead 13:12, but it was the only such moment in this part of the match. The next two actions were won by the Poles and until the score was 20:20 the game was played point by point. The next two balls turned out to be winners for Bryl and Łosiak, who equalized the score in sets.

The beginning of the last game did not portend anything good for our duo. The Swedes quickly took the lead 5:1. Then there was a renaissance in the form of the white and red duo, who won five consecutive games and took the lead 6:5. It seemed that the Poles were already heading for victory. At the end of the decisive game, they had two match points. Unfortunately, first, with the score 15:14, Ahman and Hellvig defended the attack of Bryl and Łosiak. Later, our team took the lead again, but the opponents managed to equalize again because Bryl hit the net. The next two points were scored by the Swedes and they were happy to advance to the world championship final. This is still a historic success for Polish beach volleyball, but it could have been even greater if not for the mistakes. Bryl and Łosiak made as many as 39 mistakes in this match, compared to only 19 for Ahman and Hellvig.
