Polish authorities have taken over a school building at the Russian embassy in Warsaw where diplomat children have been taught for years.
The takeover took place at the request of the local authorities, in full understanding with the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a spokesperson for the country’s government said on Saturday. It happens after a court has determined that the Polish state owns the building, and that it has been used illegally by the Russian embassy.
Polish police officers took up positions in front of the building on Saturday morning, according to Polish state TV channel TVP.
The Russian authorities react strongly to the eviction.
– A shameless violation of the Vienna Convention and an attack on Russian diplomatic property in Poland, says a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow. They warn of sharp countermeasures.
The building in question is said to have been nationalized after the war and handed over to the Soviet Union in 1945. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded in March that the building be abandoned. They referred to the court decision.
