“Polish Agriculture Chief Resigns Amidst EU’s Proposal to Extend Ukraine’s Duty-Free Grain Imports”

Warsaw has said it has asked the European Union (EU) for help to counter the impact of Ukrainian grain flowing into the bloc as Russia curbs Ukrainian exports from Black Sea ports.

However, Kovalchyk said that the EU’s recent proposal to extend Ukraine’s duty-free grain imports prompted him to decide to resign.

“This shows very clearly that the Commission will not satisfy the basic demand of these farmers,” Kovalczyk told reporters.

He announced his resignation on the day when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy arrived on an official visit to Warsaw.

During the visit, Zelensky is scheduled to meet with his Polish colleague Andrzej Duda and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

The President of Ukraine will also deliver a speech in the historic center of the Polish capital.

Moravetskis said that the import of grain and other agricultural products from Ukraine will also be discussed in the negotiations.

Poland is one of Ukraine’s biggest allies in its war with Russia, but has seen widespread protests by farmers. Farmers believe that the influx of Ukrainian grain threatens their livelihood.
