Polio Virus from Vaccine Detected in Waste Samples in UK

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Virus polio found in sewage samples in London, English. This makes the local health authorities warn the public about the importance of polio vaccination.

The virus was found in sewage samples from Beckton Sewage Treatment Works, London, taken between February and May 2022.

“It is normal for one to three polioviruses to be detected each year in UK sewage samples, but it is usually sufficient to find one once and then go undetected again,” the UKHSA said. CNN.

What was found in this waste sample was a type of virus derived from the type 2 polio vaccine.

This virus was detected from someone who got the polio vaccine abroad, then traveled to the UK. He ‘spilled’ traces of the poliovirus in vaccines in his feces

“This sample is a cause for concern as the virus ‘continues to evolve’ and is now classified as a ‘vaccine derivative’ poliovirus type 2, which can cause serious illness,” the UKHSA said.

To date, no cases of poliovirus infection in the UK have been reported. UKHSA also considers the risk of polio infection in the community to be relatively low.

However, UKHSA epidemiologist, Vanessa Saliba, appealed to the public to check their respective polio vaccination status.

“Most of the UK population has been vaccinated against polio since childhood. However, in some areas, vaccine coverage is quite low, there are still some individuals who are at risk,” Saliba said in a statement.

According to him, the detection of VDPV2 indicates the possibility of the virus spreading among individuals in the north and east London areas. “Right now they are releasing a type 2 poliovirus strain in their feces,” he added.

The vaccine-derived poliovirus, as identified in London, originates from an attenuated virus. This type of vaccine is used in a number of countries.

The virus can change over time to become wilder. Vaccine-derived poliovirus can also be spread, especially among people who have never had the polio vaccine.

Symptoms of polio include fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, neck stiffness, body aches, and can trigger paralysis. Some cases even cause permanent paralysis.
