JAKARTA, KOMPAS – The type of polio virus derived from a vaccine has been detected in waste samples in London, England. Although weaker than wild poliovirus, this variant can cause serious illness and paralysis in people who are not vaccinated against the disease.

This finding was announced by the World Health Organization (WHO), in a written statement on Wednesday (22/6/2022). “The Global Polio Laboratory Network (GPLN) has confirmed the isolation of the type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV2) from environmental samples in London, United Kingdom, which was detected as part of ongoing disease surveillance,” the WHO said.
