Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Case of paralysis withered (Acute flaccid paralysis/AFP) due to polio has been discovered again in Indonesia.
Two cases of type 2 Polio virus infection were found in Central Java and East Java in December 2023, while one other case was in East Java on January 4 2024.
Regarding the discovery of this case, epidemiologist Dicky Budiman gave an explanation. According to him, poliomyelitis or polio is an infectious disease caused by the polio virus. This virus makes muscles paralyzed, and can even cause death.
“This virus attacks the nervous system and causes inflammation of the spinal cord,” said Dicky to Health Liputan6.com via voice message quoted Monday (8/1/2024).
He added, there are three types of polio virus, namely type 1, type 2, and type 3. This disease spreads through direct contact through the feces of infected people and can also through droplets or splashes of saliva.
“By the way historical (history), polio has actually been around for a long time, tens of thousands of years, but understanding about polio was only gained in the 20th century. “One of them was the development of the polio vaccine by Jonas Salk in 1955,” explained Dicky.
A polio vaccine has also been developed in Indonesia, he continued. In fact, this polio vaccine has been exported to various countries in the world.
