Jakarta, January 15 2024
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) is implementing the Polio National Immunization Sub-Week (PIN) simultaneously in all districts/cities in East Java and Central Java Provinces, as well as Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta, starting Monday (15/1/2024) today.
The novel Oral Polio Vaccine Type 2 (nOPV2) immunization targets 8.4 million children aged 0-7 years. In detail, East Java Province has 4.4 million children, Central Java Province has 3.9 children, and Sleman Regency has 149 thousand. Sub PIN implementation will be carried out for 1 week, followed by sweeping for 5 days.
Director General of Disease Prevention and Control dr. Maxi Rein Rondonuwu explained that the Polio Sub PIN targets children aged 0 to 7 years, regardless of previous immunization status. This means that even though the immunization status is complete, the child still has to take part in the Sub PIN Polio program.
“The coverage target is at least 95% for each round and evenly distributed at each level, starting from villages, sub-districts, to districts,” he said.
The Director General of P2P together with the Regent of Sidoarjo Ahmad Muhdlor Ali launched Sub PIN Polio activities at MINU Kapasan Sidoarjo, East Java. The launch was followed by administering nOPV2 drop immunization to 144 children.
Director General Maxi explained that the Polio Sub PIN would be implemented in 2 rounds. The first round starts on January 15 2024, while the second round will take place from February 19 2024. Each round will be held within one week with a minimum gap between rounds of one month.
The areas for providing additional immunization are all districts/cities in Central Java and East Java Provinces where the polio outbreak occurred. Additional immunization was also provided in Sleman DIY Regency, namely the area directly bordering Klaten Regency, the location where polio cases were discovered some time ago.
In closing, Director General Maxi asked for the commitment of all regional officials in implementing the Polio Sub PIN.
“The roles of all of you are in accordance with their respective duties and functions and active participation from the entire community is very much needed to make this activity a success, therefore we really hope that there will be a commitment from you in supporting this activity,” he said.
