Policies should not only respond to economic issues! – Vatican News

The Permanent Observer of the Holy See at the Office of the United Nations and other international organizations spoke in Geneva, Switzerland, at the seventh-sixth meeting of the Executive Committee of the United Nations Trade Development Committee (UNCTAD) on 31 October.

Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Ettore Balestrero, representative of the Holy See, said that a policy or program designed to support less developed countries should not be limited to dealing with economic problems.

He was speaking at the seventh-sixth executive committee meeting of the United Nations Trade Development Committee (UNCTAD) on October 31, a permanent observer of the Holy See at the United Nations Office and other international organizations in in Geneva, Switzerland.

Expressing Pope Francis’ conviction that some economic laws have been effective for growth, but not for basic human development, Archbishop Balestrero said that any action must prioritize human development fundamental to each individual.

Archbishop Balestrero also expressed the joy of the Holy See in the sure contribution of this trade development committee to the implementation of the Doha Action Plan for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

He also highlighted the need to address inequality between countries and to pay attention to the education and health sectors of today, Archbishop Balestrero recalled that less developed countries face great challenges in residence in taking advantage of the full potential of international trade, the opportunities offered by global value chains and foreign investments.
