Policeman stabbed out of coma, alleged perpetrator surrendered to police

Seriously injured with a stab in the abdomen and victim of a fairly prolonged cardiac arrest, the policeman hospitalized in La Timone, had been placed in an artificial coma, said the Prefecture of Police on Sunday.

Today, the vital prognosis is no longer engaged, Areetea Haapaitahaa emerged from the coma in which he had been artificially immersed. Despite the cardiac arrest, he should not have any serious after-effects. However, the young police officer must undergo surgery on the liver.

The alleged perpetrator of the stabbing went Sunday evening, accompanied by his lawyer, to the premises of the North Division of Marseille. He is said to be a 17-year-old minor, living in Malpassé.

The adolescent had been identified, in particular by surveillance cameras and was actively sought. In this case, four other people were taken into custody for failing to assist a person in danger.

On Sunday, on the sidewalk and the roadway in front of the bakery on rue Balthazar de Montron, there were only traces of blood surrounded by the chalk investigators.

Saturday, it was around 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening, when the 25-year-old policeman was stabbed in the middle of a brawl involving several young people.

He was not on duty and was in plain clothes, a police source said, saying that as a police officer, he had an obligation to intervene if the circumstances so required.

The peacekeeper did not disclose his status as a police officer when he intervened and was struck by one of the people involved in the brawl.

Areetea Haapaitahaa, originally from Polynesia, had just been assigned to the security of the Marseille courthouse, just out of the Nîmes police academy.

An investigation was opened and entrusted to the judicial police.
