The police warn residents of Etten-Leur not to respond to a threatening letter that has been placed in several mailboxes. It states that their homes are being watched. If they don’t hang up a Russian flag or transfer money, they will be made to pay for it.
“Every 1st of the month we will observe this neighborhood. If we do not see a Russian flag hanging that day, these homes will be noted and the consequences for you and your family will be great in the future. If not now, it will be later, but your turn will come. Think carefully about whether your support for Ukraine is worth it,” reads the letter posted by the police on Instagram.
An account number will follow later, the letter said.
The letter writers say that their ‘appeal’ is a response to reports that many Ukrainians live in the neighborhood and that many Ukrainian flags have been hung there.
The police suspect that this is a form of (digital) fraud and calls on people not to transfer money if requested. An investigation has been launched and people who saw who distributed the letters are being urged to come forward.
