Police violence protests: curfews in major US cities

Across the United States, the brutal arrest and death of George Floyd drives people onto the streets. The protest escalated in many cities. Los Angeles and other curfews, several states activated the National Guard.

Demonstrations against racism and police violence have taken place again in many cities in the United States. The protest often did not remain peaceful, and the authorities then reacted with drastic measures.

At least eight states – including Minnesota, Ohio and Texas – put the National Guard on alert, according to the CNN, because the regular security forces are overwhelmed. A number of cities imposed a curfew at night – including Los Angeles, the second largest city in the United States.

Arrested on suspicion of looting

The police of the California metropolis said that there were “big and violent protests” in the city center. Mayor Eric Garcetti said the curfew was necessary to “restore peace”.

According to the police, more than 500 people were temporarily arrested in Los Angeles – among other things on suspicion of looting, burglaries, violation of probation regulations and attempted murder. All but 18 suspects have now been released.

According to CNN, more than 100 people were temporarily arrested in Chicago, Illinois, and around 200 in New York, according to police, where demonstrators moved in front of the Trump Tower – the building in which US President Donald Trump resided lived for his move to the White House.

Death after brutal police operation

The protests and riots triggered the death of Black George Floyd as a result of a brutal police operation in Minneapolis. The 46-year-old was arrested on Monday on suspicion of paying with a fake $ 20 bill. A policeman stuck his knee on Floyd’s neck for minutes, even though he groaned, “I can’t breathe.” Eventually Floyd remained motionless and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead a little later.

Several passers-by filmed the brutal use. The police officer was released immediately, but was arrested and charged only days later.

Trump blames leftist groups

President Trump blamed leftist groups for the riots and accused them of dishonoring Floyd’s memory. “The violence and vandalism are led by Antifa and other violent left-wing groups.” Floyd’s death is a “serious tragedy”. He announced another tough move: “My government will stop the bullying and we will stop it freezing cold.”

However, Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, where Minneapolis is also located, said with reference to an investigation that violence was apparently fueled by rival drug gangs, white racists and anarchists.
