NEW YORK – A 27-year-old woman from Long Island has been arrested on charges of endangering a minor for allegedly leaving her 3 and 9-year-old children in a parked car for about 30 minutes while shopping at a mall.
The temperature was 37 degrees at the time and the car was not running.
Suffolk County deputies who responded to a 911 call in the Smith Haven Mall parking lot found the two children in a Nissan Pathfinder around 6 p.m. Wednesday. They allege that the mother, Guadalupe Guevara-Díaz, left them alone in the car in the cold temperatures while she went shopping.
Police did not release any information about the children’s condition when they were found, but they appeared to be in good condition. They were given to a friend of the family. Child Protective Services has been notified.
Guevara-Díaz is expected to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday afternoon. It was not immediately clear whether he had hired an attorney.
