The murderers of lawyer Derk Wiersum are in the picture as suspects in an earlier fatal shooting in Paramaribo. The Surinamese police have that announced.
The shooting was in May 2019 and claimed two lives. The victims were part of a group of people who were standing in a parking lot in the entertainment area of Paramaribo. The group was shot at from a passing car.
A 19-year-old man from Suriname and a 49-year-old Utrecht resident were killed. The perpetrators’ car was later found burning in a suburb of the Surinamese capital.
Investigation showed that a Dutch drug gang was behind the liquidation. That is why the Surinamese authorities asked the Dutch police in Amsterdam for help.
Thirty years in prison
Recently, dozens of people have been interrogated in Suriname, and that investigation led to Moreno B. and Giërmo B. They were sentenced to thirty years in prison in the Netherlands for the murder of lawyer Wiersum in September 2019, so a few months after the liquidation in Paramaribo.
According to the Surinamese police, Moreno B. and Giërmo B. are currently considered “potential suspects”. Justice in the Netherlands and Suriname has taken over the investigation. Arrests may still be made in Suriname, the Surinamese police say.
