Police Shoot Teenager in France: Riots and Outrage Erupt in Response

Quoting AFP, the shooting incident occurred in the suburbs of Paris, Nanterre, Tuesday (27/6/2023) morning. A teenager named Nahel M. (17) died as a result of being shot by the police.

Initially, the police stopped the teenager for violating traffic rules. A video on social media, authenticated by AFP, shows two police officers trying to stop the vehicle.

One of the police appears to be pointing his gun at the driver through a window and shooting at close range. Then, the victim’s car was seen moving several tens of meters before crashing.

Emergency services workers tried to resuscitate the teenager at the scene. However, he died not long after.

Perpetrator Detained

The police officer who shot the teenager has been detained on murder charges. Paris police chief Laurent Nunez acknowledged in an interview with BFM television that the police action “raised questions”, although he said there was a possibility the officer felt threatened.

Meanwhile, Nanterre Mayor Patrick Jarry said he was “shocked” by the video images. He also sent his condolences to the boy’s mother.

“He hopes that an investigation opened (…) will make it possible to shed light on as soon as possible the true circumstances of this tragedy,” his office said.

Family lawyer Yassine Bouzrou told the same channel that while all parties should wait for the outcome of the investigation, the images “clearly show a policeman killing a young man in cold blood”.

“This is far from any kind of legitimate defense,” he said.

It added that the family had filed a complaint accusing police of “lying” claiming the car had tried to run over officers.

Riots Arise in France

On Tuesday (27/6/2023) night, riots broke out due to the shooting of teenagers by police in France. Protesters in Nanterre set fires, set cars on fire and smashed bus stops as tensions mounted between police and local residents.

Clashes continued on Wednesday evening (28/6) spreading from neighborhoods around the capital to other French cities, including Toulouse, Dijon and Lyon. About 2,000 police were deployed to Paris and the surrounding suburbs.

In the working class districts 18 and 19 in northeastern Paris, police fired light bulbs to disperse protesters who were burning trash. However, instead of leaving, the crowd responded by throwing bottles at the police.

“We are sick of being treated like this. This is for Nahel, we are Nahel,” said two young men who called themselves “Avengers” as they pushed dumpsters from a nearby plantation to add to the burning barricades.
