Police shoot man after crisis at mental health center in Phoenix, Arizona

By Brent Corrado

Phoenix, Arizona, USA- A man was seriously injured after being shot by Phoenix Police on Tuesday, July 19, the department said, following a call about a mental health crisis.

-Announcement-

The shooting occurred near 111th Avenue and Camelback Road when a man appeared to be having a crisis at an inpatient mental health facility and was making suicide threats, Sgt. Brian Bower said.

He said the facility manager called police saying the man was “making threats against staff and himself to jump out a window and cut himself.”

The officers arrived and began talking to him, but then he took a knife out of his pocket and began to approach them. Authorities told him to stop and drop the knife several times, but he continued.

“One of the officers involved used his stun gun on the man, hitting him. However, the stun gun had no effect. The man continued to walk toward the officers with the knife still in his hand,” Bower said. “It was at that moment that the officer-involved shooting occurred.”

Medical assistance was provided to the man, who was taken to hospital in critical condition. The man has not been identified, but he is said to be a man in his 20s.

Bower detailed that it appears that two officers were directly involved in the shooting, one of them using the stun gun and the other using a pistol. Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officers and a mobile crisis team were called to the scene, but the shooting took place before they arrived.

-Announcement-

The investigation is ongoing.
