Israel Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the shooting of an autistic Palestinian by Israeli police as a tragedy. The government is now awaiting the outcome of an investigation by the Department of Justice, Netanyahu said on Sunday. Previously, he had not spoken out on the May 30 incident.

The Israeli police said they had shot an unarmed Palestinian in the old city of Jerusalem. Accordingly, he ignored several requests to stop. The autistic man was on the way to his school, accompanied by a teacher. He is said to have been in his early 30s.

Cell phone instead of gun in hand

As the Israeli Army Radio reported after the incident, the police initially assumed that the man was holding a gun. As a result, they opened fire after a persecution on foot. But the object turned out to be the man’s cell phone. Netanyahu said what happened to the man was a tragedy. He was believed to have been considered militant in a highly sensitive area.

Palestinians had condemned the killing as a “war crime”. The act was compared on social media to the brutal death of black George Floyd in the United States, who died in a police operation in late May.

Protests have been going on in the United States for several days after George Floyd’s death. In Buffalo, officials injured an older protester. The video of the incident went around the world and caused outrage.
