Massachusetts State Police are searching for the driver in a hit-and-run that seriously injured a pedestrian in Somerville, Massachusetts, Monday night.
State police received a call around 8:50 p.m. Monday for a hit-and-run on McGrath Highway, which is Route 28 at the intersection with Broadway, in Somerville. One person was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.
Investigators are now looking for a white van with damage to the front end. Anyone with information should call Medford headquarters at 781-396-0100.
A witness told NBC10 Boston that the victim was coming from a nearby Stop & Shop and was carrying shopping bags when he was struck. He says the impact of the crash was so strong that the victim’s shoes flew off. That witness also told NBC10 Boston that the victim was breathing but said nothing.
“I see an old man lying on the ground with Stop and Shop grocery bags everywhere. I’m on the ground and I’m like, ‘Hey, what’s your name? Are you okay?’ And he’s still breathing a little bit, and we were just sitting around waiting for people to come. “
According to police, the driver of the vehicle involved fled the scene after hitting the pedestrian. Police initially said investigators were looking for a van, which was possibly white and could have lettering on the sides. Later, police said investigators are looking for a white van with a damaged front end.
“How are you going to hit someone and just walk away? You can’t just walk away, you have to stop and make sure the person is okay, “the witness told NBC10 Boston.
Meanwhile, state police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that killed a pedestrian on Route 93 in Braintree Tuesday morning.
Officers are working to establish a description of the car that fatally struck the man around 4:25 a.m., along with other facts related to the incident.
