Heerenveen – Roughly speaking, officers shoot two hundred times a year. More than half are warning shots, the rest are aimed. According to police scientist Jaap Timmer of the VU Amsterdam, half of this is on vehicles and half on people. “Police bullets have killed an average of three people and injured 17 a year over the past 40 years,” says Timmer. “The police don’t just pull out a gun and shoot,” says the police scientist, who does wonder how effective shooting at a vehicle is.
