NEW YORK – One man was killed and eight people were injured in an early-morning shooting Monday at a crowd in Harlem, according to the New York police.
According to preliminary information, in the early morning hours, officers responded to reports of shots fired on FDR Drive and found five people with gunshot wounds. All five were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Four other people with gunshot wounds were taken to hospitals, police said. A 21-year-old man was pronounced dead at the hospital. The injured were six men and two women.
VIOLENT FATHERS DAY
“This Father’s Day weekend is a weekend that people were supposed to be able to enjoy with their families,” Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at a news conference.
The investigation was underway Monday and police did not initially have details on why the people had gathered or what might have led to the shooting.
No information on possible suspects was initially released, although police posted on Twitter that a weapon had been recovered at the scene. The population was asked to offer whatever information they had.
“The emboldened people responsible for this are the very ones our officers fight every day to keep our city safe,” Sewell said.
