Police report Mannheim: HeidelbergWiesloch

Heidelberg / Wiesloch / Walldorf / Sandhausen / Nussloch / Leimen (ots) –

As already registered in other federal states, a new scam in online trading, in which in these cases the perpetrator is not the seller but the buyer, is now also spilling over into the local region.

Shortly before Christmas, the investigators became aware of the first two cases in Heidelberg and Nussloch. They now add up to a total of six known cases, primarily in the Wiesloch area, two of which were already stuck in the experimental stage.

The potential victims immediately became suspicious and broke off further contact with prospective buyers. Nevertheless, damage of several thousand euros has so far occurred in the other four cases.

After an initial assessment, the investigators assume a high number of unreported cases.

And this is how the new scam of the fraudsters works:

For example, a seller places an advertisement online on eBay classifieds and gives his mobile phone number to contact him. Shortly afterwards, he receives a WhatsApp message from an alleged prospective buyer after first contacting him via WhatsApp, which he uses to enter the details of his debit or credit card to process the sale.

After entering the data, the page with the link can no longer be reached and the fraudsters are in possession of the seller’s card details.

As a result, money transfers were carried out several times in the local area for individual persons affected (age: 27-74 years), so that this resulted in damage of several thousand euros.

The money transfers all went to Eastern European countries, so that a chargeback was not possible.
