Police release video of police shooting at Subway Station – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – The New York Police Department on Friday released body camera footage of a shooting last weekend at a Brooklyn subway station that began as a standoff between police and an alleged fare evader.

Two police officers opened fire Sunday afternoon at a Brownsville stop after the man accused of jumping the switch station allegedly attacked officers with a knife. He was hit several times, as were two bystanders, a 49-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman.

The 49-year-old man, identified as Gregory Delpeche, was hit in the head on his way to work at Woodhull Hospital and remained in critical condition on Tuesday, Gothamist reported. The man, who is 26, was injured by grazing. A police officer was also shot in the armpit.

“This unnecessary tragedy could have been avoided if appropriate steps had been taken to mitigate the situation,” said Nick Liakas, the attorney for the Delpeche family. Delpeche continues to improve in hospital; the three others injured in the confrontation, including the suspect, are expected to recover.

Delpeche’s family was scheduled to hold a press conference Friday night as they reviewed body camera footage with their attorney.

Knife suspect Derrell Mickles, 37, faced a judge virtually from his hospital bed on Friday.

The shooting sparked a mass protest on Wednesday, where police arrested nearly 20 people who criticized the officers’ actions. Protesters took to the streets of Brownsville, participating in chants against the police department. All but one of the 18 handcuffed men were summoned and released.

Another family member at a press conference Wednesday called the NYPD “reckless” in the shooting. New York City Councilman Chris Banks, who represents Brownsville, said the officers’ actions were arrogant and callous, calling the incident “dangerous, reckless and reckless.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has said he sees it differently.

“I know people would say, well, police should never fire their guns in a subway system. Ideology is not reality,” said the mayor. “Police officers must be trained to make the right decisions. When I watched that video I saw control. I saw a desire to reduce the situation as much as possible.”

Authorities have said all shots were fired by New York Police Department officers.

In the video, officers can be seen trying to subdue the man with Tasers first, firing at least two shots at Mickles, which were ineffective in knocking him to the ground. The knife seen in the video was removed from the crime scene, despite police initially saying the weapon had been recovered.

The New York Police Department said at a press conference later that they would work to release the images as soon as possible. Adams said he saw the footage and defended the officers.
