Police Release Images of Additional Suspects in Times Square Attack on NYPD Officers
In a shocking turn of events, police have released images of two additional suspects believed to be involved in the brutal attack on a pair of NYPD officers in Times Square. The incident, which was caught on camera, took place on January 27 and has since sparked outrage and concern among the public.
The surveillance footage captures the chaos that unfolded when officers responded to a migrant shelter on W. 42nd St. near Seventh Ave. A disorderly group had gathered, and the officers were attempting to subdue the situation when the brawl erupted. One particular individual, 24-year-old Yohenry Brito, resisted arrest and violently swung his arms, causing the officers to fall to the ground. This moment became a catalyst for an even more disturbing sequence of events.
As the officers struggled on the ground, a swarm of men descended upon them, launching a vicious assault by hitting and kicking them repeatedly. The disturbing images from the surveillance cameras showcase the brutality of the attack and highlight the vulnerability that law enforcement officers often face while carrying out their duties.
The police believe that at least eight suspects were involved in this heinous act. At the scene, Yorman Reveron, 24, Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel, 19, Wilson Juarez, 21, and Kelvin Servita Arocha, 19, were apprehended and taken into custody. Two days later, a fifth suspect, Jhoan Boada, 22, was also captured.
However, it was Yohenry Brito who faced the most serious charges. A Manhattan grand jury indicted him on sealed felony and misdemeanor charges. He was the only person involved in the incident who was held on bail, which ignited a political controversy amid the ongoing migrant crisis faced by the city.
In a court appearance on Wednesday, Yohenry Brito stood before the Manhattan Criminal Court, prompting many to question the circumstances that led to such a violent outburst. Meanwhile, police identified Carlos Durante, 19, as one of the individuals caught on surveillance video during the assaults. Authorities are currently working with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office to determine the extent of Durante’s involvement.
The attack on the officers left them with scratches and bruises, but the emotional toll cannot be underestimated. NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell expressed his dismay at the incident, referring to the perpetrators as “cowards.” He emphasized the need for consequences for such acts of violence, stating, “You want to know why our cops are getting assaulted? There’s no consequences. We must change this. End of story.”
In their pursuit of justice, the police are now seeking the public’s assistance in locating the two additional suspects. They have urged anyone with information about their whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
As the investigation continues and more details come to light, it is imperative that society as a whole reflects on the importance of supporting law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line to maintain public safety. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges they face and the urgent need for accountability and respect towards those who serve and protect our communities.
