Police Raid on Drug Trafficking Operation Fails in Rennes

By guessing the smartphones aimed at them behind the windows of the Audi, the police understood that their night briefing, Tuesday January 23, in the parking lot of the Castorama in Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande (Ille-et-Vilaine) had just ended. And that the vast raid planned at the same time to dismantle a deal point in the Blosne district, a hotbed of drug trafficking in the Rennes area, had failed.

The car drove at a walking pace, giving its occupants time to film the dark intervention suits, the forbidding faces of the plainclothes investigators and even the helmeted colossi of the “82”, one of the new “super CRS” specialized in sensitive operations. Then he accelerated towards the exit of the parking lot and disappeared as stealthily as he had appeared. The police started chasing him. A complete loss.

Nine months of shadowing and eavesdropping went up in smoke in the space of a few seconds; fifteen targeted objectives, including the “crochet” of Blosne traffickers, and not a single one of them arrested. Rennes PJ investigators, “literally disgusted”according to a judicial source, are fuming: this time, the traffickers seemed particularly well informed.

Tuesday morning, around 5:30 a.m., several cars had already been spotted going around the places where the arrests were to take place. At the same time, a vehicle equipped with a beacon installed by the police as part of the investigation was also detected in the Castorama parking lot.

However, 5:30 a.m. corresponds to the time initially scheduled for the police briefing, information mentioned in an internal police memo. On the evening of Monday January 22, this schedule was finally postponed to 6:30 a.m. to ensure that a car used by Rennes traffickers returned from the Paris region loaded with drugs.

New mode of operation

The occupants of the marked vehicle, who conducted a first round in the parking lot, were unaware of this last-minute modification, but on the other hand seemed informed of the initial schedule appearing in the police note. The place being deserted at the time of their passage, their accomplices traveling in the Audi took over an hour later, as a precaution.

Forewarned is forearmed: they then came face to face with the police in the middle of a coordination meeting. “A fiasco all the way down”summarizes an investigator. “Every day, dozens of businesses are successful. This time she failed. Very clever who can explain the reasons”tempers a police official.
